Restoring Independence for a Homeowner in Alta Vista, IA

Two people work on a porch. One stands on a ladder adjusting something on the ceiling; the other holds tools, standing beside a porch swing.

This year marked a significant milestone for Project Flo, as we celebrated our 10th anniversary of transforming communities through hope and hands-on service. In Alta Vista, IA, our first project focused on helping a male homeowner with mild disabilities regain a safer, more comfortable living environment. The mission of Project Flo is clear: improve communities by restoring homes and building hope—and this project embodied that spirit fully.

Community Contributions and Volunteer Efforts

Volunteers from across the area joined forces to tackle an array of tasks that made a substantial difference in the homeowner’s daily life. The project began with removing, scraping, and repainting all the storm windows, which brought renewed light and warmth to the home. Dedicated volunteers repaired and glazed both windows and storm screens, ensuring durability and improved insulation.

From painting window trims and cellar sills to applying Thompson’s Water Seal to the porch, steps, and picnic table, the project team worked tirelessly. One highlight was the structural reinforcement of the porch—installing new joists and plywood pieces—followed by a fresh coat of paint on the east porch, deck, and steps.

But the commitment didn’t stop there. Volunteers organized wood piles, removed an old satellite dish, repaired roof holes, and took on significant siding replacements, repairing all rotted wood and wrapping the porch in protective Tyvek house wrap. The transformation was completed with a new gutter and downspout installation, a trap door under the side porch, and repairs to the picnic table. Before-and-after photos showed the remarkable progress and collective impact of community teamwork.
