This year The Project Flo Association celebrated an important milestone; 10 years of service to Chickasaw County, Iowa. The 10-year anniversary celebration was a huge success!

The crew of 75 (dispersed to 7 different houses and projects) took Saturday afternoon and evening to celebrate all the hard work and dedication put into the last 10 years! The celebration included games, food, stories/reflection and music! The following are a few comments heard through the open mic segment:

From Volunteers / Family:

  • Giving starts the cycle of receiving. Mom’s mantra “when you give, you will receive, not 10 times over but 100  times more”.
  • Watching the young people come back year after year with their honed skills is great to see.
  • We thought it was for family only but, happily, we were wrong! We love that we can be part of it every year!
  • As an older sibling, when growing up, we noticed dad giving to the community and as children were born and raised, mom carried that torch.
  • I feel I can rely on any one of my siblings during times of crisis and I encourage all my nieces and nephews to follow in their footsteps.
  • The reason I do this is it makes you feel good. You do this once; you’ll be doing it for the rest of your life.

From Recipients:

  • We are thankful to Project Flo. We gained a “new house” that became a “home”.
  • My brother was a recipient of Project Flo – he was so appreciative and felt so blessed. He asked me to tell the Throndsons how grateful he was anytime I see them and let them know that the community is lucky to have them.
  • Project Flo came at the weakest point in our lives and bought hope back into our lives again.

From The Next Generation:

  • I remember grandma taking me to Meal on Wheels; seeing the impact of Project Flo and the response from others has made an impression on me.
  • Love seeing how we started 10 years ago and how it has grown and bettered the community. I would like to see it expand outside the area.
  • Project Flo has taught me empathy, and everyone has a story; it is crucial to respect and appreciate that story as we strive to help. Giving to others is a firm reminder of what is important to me: family, friends, good health and opportunities for everyone. I also love the learning and leadership opportunities.
  • It’s a mashup of Extreme Home Makeover, Habitat for Humanity and family reunion; My favorite week of the year!
  • I’ve learned skills during Project Flo that I can apply to my own new home.
  • Observed a lot of our volunteers are family but now it is growing with friends.
  • I hear when you give you receive. It’s true, we are the blessed ones.
  • I hope this goes on for a hundred years. It is going to be very important that my children can experience this type of giving and learn some new skills.
  • This all begins at home. Values that are handed down to generations and it all begins at home. We go into people’s homes and bring to them that it all begins at home.
  • I’ve only been working with Project Flo for three days, but I feel good with the work I do. I feel good doing it!

Inspired by the Throndson ancestors, the primary goal is to share the gifts given and lead with the heart. Looking forward to the next generation as work continues through the next decade, it  is exciting to see where the torch carriers will take this organization!
